Another project started. Another conundrum. To begin with .....
Peter Hazelton (1793-1846) was born in Concord, Rockingham, New
Hampshire, to Ballard and Sarah (Noyes) Hazeltine. The spelling of the name is
Hazelton in our family, but the earlier version was usually Hazeltine; some branches
of the family continued with this version. But there are many other versions:
Haselton/Hasleton/Hazleton/Hazletine/etc. As most of us who do genealogy know -
the spellings can get the better of us at times.
Peter married Sarah "Salley" Pierce/Pearce,
probably in June 1817, in New York. The 1850 census, the only one where Salley
is listed individually, states she was born in Rhode Island. Her children give
RI when listing where their mother was born. Only a daughter once stated New
Hampshire, but since that is where her father (Peter) was born, it probably was
an error.
I don't know why Peter was in New York, probably for land. I
assume that is where they met. In my great-grandmother's, Mary Ella (Hazelton)
Childs, notes, she states Salley "was from Gains" when she married. Gains
and Gainesville, NY are in Genesee County, where Peter requested (but probably
never owned) land. Mary Ella gives some possible clues as to Salley's parentage,
but more on that after some initial introductions.
We have NO idea who Salley's parents were. I do not believe
they were James and Phebe (Wood) Pearce from Little Compton, Rhode Island, as
people suggest on the many Ancestry.com family trees. I have proven that beyond
a doubt, for my benefit anyway. Another article, another day. Anyone with any
information on Salley's parentage - other than the above mentioned Pearces,
please let me know. If you do think it is the Pearce family - please include
documentation for your reasoning.
In this article I will start with a basic descendants chart of
Peter and Salley's daughter, Nancy Jane, the first of their seven children. The
rest of the children will be added in subsequent articles. I am hoping to get
the attention of descendants - other than Brooks Bowman (my great-great-grandfather)
- of the other other children, for possible information to help in the quest of
finding Salley's parents. Brooks and his wife, Sarah Ann Lane, had three
daughters. Roscelia and Frances (Frankie), though married, had no children. Mary
Ella and her husband, Carlos W. Childs, had two daughters, Frances Hazelton
(Hazel) and my grandmother, Edna Ella. Hazel never married. Edna's descendants are
Brooks' only descendants.
All of Peter and Salley's children were born in Genesee
County, New York. The family removed to Calhoun County, Michigan in 1836. Peter
died in 1846 and Salley died in 1852.
1) Nancy Jane
Hazelton (1819-1891) - Nancy had daughter, Lelia Luella, out-of-wedlock, on 24 February 1850, in Marengo,
Calhoun, MI. Lelia probably spent her early years with the neighbor family of Roswell
Wilcox as Wilcox is the name she used when she married at 16. She did eventually
(or maybe always) know her mother, Nancy, and Nancy spent her last years with
Lelia and family in Kansas and is buried there. She promised Lelia that she
would reveal the father's name, but according to family lore she never did. It
would be wonderful if a descendant of Lelia and Oscar Ware had DNA analyzed to give us a possible answer.
Oscar and Lelia lived most of their lives in Kansas. The
first two children (of eight) were born in Michigan, before they moved to
Kansas. The children scattered to several states in their adult years. This is
what I have learned about the family, researching online - not all is verified:
